Carnegie Still Open

We went to Carnegie today (February 12th) and it was tacky. The
motocross track was awesome.  We talked to Tony at MotoMart and he told
us that attendance has been down, and said that a lot of people think
Carnegie is closed. Let everyone know that Carnegie is still open, and
if you have Facebook or Twitter accounts please spread the word.

Well my daughter and I went there today (Feb. 13) and the place was packed. Not the normal crowd that we see either. A lot of morons out doing stupid stuff. From a grown man splash passing my 8yr. old on the little kids track to a bunch of kids (teens) spinning donuts in the rocks around Motomart to another teen girl, with her dad, nearly hitting my daughter head on on the frontage road. My daughter had to dump her bike in order to avoid the collision, and neither the young girl, nor her father said so much as sorry. As a matter of fact, despite the volunteer rangers asking them to stay, they just split. One of the worst days, as far as crowd goes, I’ve had anywhere. On the positive side, the rangers who attended to my daughter, sling, ice pack, and bandage for the road rash, were SUPER! I was really impressed with how they treated her and I both. It probably helped that a volunteer ranger was behind us on the road and saw the whole incident, but either way, kudos to them and a big THANK YOU from me. One of the rangers said that this long weekend, presidents day, has a reputation for being one of the worst. Honestly, if it was like this all the time I wouldn’t have my daughter riding, it was that bad. Can’t wait till it goes back to normal.
Another thing I wanted to bring up was how having the creek closed was responsible, in part, for this accident. Normally we travel through the creek bed to avoid the traffic, but with it being closed we were forced into using the road. Especially on weekends like this, when the crowds are so large, it’s dangerous to have everyone on that small roadway. Just thought I would throw that out there for when we win this lawsuit and someone balks at reopening the creek.

    THE PROBLEM WITH OBESITY

In response to the fact that Carnegie is still open, I want to point out the health benefits of taking your kids riding. The San Francisco Chronicle reports on February 25th that “Governor Schwarzenegger weighed in on Wednesday on California’s pricey battle with obesity, calling for the elimination of sugary ‘sports drinks’ in schools and more vigorous physical activity during and after school.” Our leaders need to think outside the box. How often do you see obese kids riding with their parents at Carnegie? I would say not very often.

The governor’s motto should be, buy every kid an off road bike (then see whether they get enough vigorous activity). Kids having fun do not have to be forced to forgo sports drinks or be compelled to take part in vigorous activity during and after school. Sports should be fun and having fun is the name of the game in terms of keeping kids healthy. How about an after school off-road team. They had them in LA. I don’t know whether they still exist. The point being that having a motorcycle park available for families and kids does wonders for fighting obesity and other related health problems.

Some people think that riding a dirt bike entails just sitting on your butt and turning the throttle. Nothing could be further from the truth. Of course we are not all professional moto-cross racers, but a study in the 1980s found that professional moto-cross racers were fitter than athletes in any other professional sport with the exception of soccer. Holding onto a bike and racing across rough terrain, with the bike handling skills that go along with that, requires the same sort of extraordinary energy output that professional moto-cross riders use in their sport.

I know how physically demanding our sport is. When I get back from a ride I announce ” Carnegie One, Diana zero”. In other words Carnegie beats me up physically. For a slightly overweight older woman, I do all right and I attribute my good health to my weekend off road motorcycle rides. I also eat healthy and ride a bicycle along with other activities, but there is nothing like off road motorcycle riding for the pure adrenaline rush I get. It stays with me all week until my next ride.

Keep the rubber on the ground and stay healthy.
